This story is a great example of Poe's vivid yet dark imagination. The "Red Death" is an imaginary plague that ravaged an imaginary principality; however, though this plague is fictional, there have been many instances of plagues that have decimated European nations throughout the centuries. Despite the horror and death of his subjects, the Prince Prospero isolates himself and a thousand of his friends in a secluded castle. They ignore their fellow men and party while they wait out the plague. Their hope is the plague will run its course, and when all the people have died, the plague will perish. Poe leaves it up to our imagination to create our own ideas. What is the "masked figure"? a ghost or an actual corpse. or was it just a figment of the revelers' imaginations?

I think that the protagonist is the king and all his friends, and that the antagonist are all of the people outside of the castle.

Remember, the climax of the story should be the moment when a realization is made, or some sort of understanding.
as far as the protagonist is concerned, he must be the person who endures and overcomes a conflict.
the antagonist is the one who causes the conflict.

I think the theme of the story is not to be selfish and to take in consideration other people and help them out in there time of need even though they might catch the disease but is better dying knowing that at least you try to help someone.

I think that the protagonist is the prince because he is trying to escape death, even though hes not the good guy in the story. And i think that death is the antagonist because its causing such a problem for the princh and all the people in his castle and outside of it.

the elements of the poem that make it romantic are death, the passing of time, and imagination. Death is the main element because the people in the poem are trying to hide from death because they think they can escape it, but they cant, death returns you to nature, another element of romanticism.
I believe the antagonist is the clock beause it causes a conflict for not only the protagonist(the prince) but for the party guests as well. The clock chimes in and distyurbs the entire party forcing the prince to revert back to thinking and reality, when all he wants to do is party.

I think the protagonist(s) are the guests in the castle; they are trying to escape the red death, and so they are cooped up in Prince Prospero's castle and they can't get out, even if they wanted to. Prince Prosepero is the antagonist because he is the one causing conflict and keeping the guests in the castle. Also, I think the Red Death is an antagonist because it is the reason the prince is keeping the guests in his castle.
